I don't think the canting mast idea will work on the D15 as the mast just sits on a ball on the front beam and will become detached when the rig tension is lowered significantly. I believe that could be a Dart 15 Sting mast that you have which is the same section as the Dart 18 and about 0.6 metres longer than a standard Dart 15 mast.
Have you tried Mersea Trailers, they sell catamaran trailers
with the adjustable arms so may be able to help you out.
Does your trailer have a data plate with the manufacturers
name on it?

I've towed with the mast attached both ways ( split mast strapped on top of beams rather than beneath though) and didn't notice any appreciable difference in fuel economy. Just down to personal preference really.
