After so much helpful info re covers thought I'd try again! I am considering a box for my trailer, don't fancy building a wooden one due to upkeep etc, is there a supplier of lockable fiberglass boxes? Thanks everyone in anticipation
I think Steve Sawford is soon able to supply boxes in fibreglass after talking with him a short while ago.
Try contacting him - details on our web-site.
I have a West Mersea trailer complete with galvanised box.
Although happy with the trailer I do not like the box. It is not very user friendly bending as soon as anything is rested ontop of it, cuts cold hands & rips anything you mistakenly catch on it.
Furthermore, of the overlapping 2 lids, it's the rear one that has to open first, which is the most inaccessible when the boat is loaded. Very awkward if you need to get access.
I don't need the huge capacity it offers & it's a shame the moulded roof boxes that have become more popular for cars aren't available that bit longer as I think one of those would be ideal. (Someone [non Sprint] at Grafham has adopted this idea on his/her trailer but presumably must put the sail elsewhere)
I am selling my Dart16 and want to get a Sprint (why I am looking on this site). I fitted my old ski-ing top box (plastic, streamlined, with locks and designed to stay on a roof at 100mph) and it takes all the Dart 16 sails, including Kite, rudders/cross bar and extention, spare tools, spare wheel, and... both the road wheels which I take of if I am not going anywhere for a while ! The thing is that a few years back there was a change in Ski design, they became shorter, so new Ski roof boxes are shorter now - but if you can get your hands on an older one they are usually about 7 foot long, just about right for a rolled up mainsail. (looks pretty slick too.
Hi - Steve Sawford was at Grafham sailing today. He confirmed he is working on a fibre glass box for trailers but it is some weeks off. Currently he is working on a pattern for it (but has to fit it between his build of new Access dinghy's and Sprint 15 repairs & refurbishments.
