There always seems to be a good reason for why things are as they are. But I sail two up using a trapeeze. This is largely for the entertainment of the crew (10 years old). I am certain that there is no speed advantage, however as I read the class rules this puts us in sport mode and thus on a lower handicap.Does any one know the reasons for this also does use of trapeeze affect the schrs rating?
Hi Nick,
Your interpretation of the rules is correct. If you use the trapeze 2 up in racing then you should sign on in Sport mode with a PY 882. The only reason we did it that way is simplicity. We do not have any data wrt the speed advantage and so we have no PY #. Also we do not want to be devisive with multiple formats and PY numbers. If you sail under the SCHRS system then it probably makes no difference to the 2-up rating - I cannot recall their being any input into the formulae for use of trapeze (but I would have to check this).
Generally we discourage the use of the SCHRS system as it unfairly penalizes the Sport format wrt the unarig format and also it cannot be used in mixed fleets with monohulls. It is favourable to the 2-up format, however, as it gives 2-up boats a different (slower)SCHRS number.
The best ploy would be to get special dispensation from your Club sailors to use the PY916 based on the age of your crew. If you take part in our open meetings, however,we would request that you leave the trapeze equipment off for 2 up sailing (or sign on at PY882).

this year i am using a crew but will not be trapezing
so i gather that will be the py916.
i usually bottle out when its windy weather so having a crew gives me the confidence knowing that with more weight on board im less likely to overcook it.
hopefully my theory will work for me. and not liking solo trapezing either 2 up is the only way to go.

Thanks Bob. My club has agreed that Two Up we can sail off SCHRS (958) as they calculate a Hobie 16 (808 or so) off the same system. Incidently a Dragoon Extreem with asymetric kite and a similar up wind sail area( and more modern high aspect cut) sails off 1032. I will check the SCHRS rule re trapeeze .As I said previously I think there is no speed advantage I need at least a force 5 to fly a hull with crew on the wire. That said it is still fun for the crew on the wire even in a force 3. I appreciate the class rules with respect to class events.
