Yes, these are just Cats built to a set of measurements which are a bit looser than one design classes like the Sprint 15. This enables various manufacturers to built their own designs which comply with the formula and all the designs take part e.g Formula 18 events.
By far the biggest class is Formula 18 which includes the Hobie Tiger, the Dart Hawk, The Capricorn & many others.
There is also a Formula 16 of which the Stealth is an example. There is also a Formula 20 - but I'm not sure what boats are included in it.

Its a strange idea. Its basically handicap racing without the handicaps. Certain boats favour certain conditions.

Better than that, if a new F18 appears that seems better, you have to buy it, de-valuing the other boats and costing you cash. No one wants a Dart Hawk anymore.

This even takes place with boats from the same manufacturer. The new Hobie Tiger is different (and quicker) than the old one.

If all the different F18s cost the same, I can't understand they don't all just buy one manufacturer, stop the developement and protect your initial spend?

Its clever how the manufacturers have found a way to get the punters to accept the need to keep buying new boats. The joys of development classes.

Remember,its not real racing unless the boats have the same dimensions and you are racing on the same bits of water at the same time.

I have always been pleased to congratulate the people who beat me. They invariably give me some tips to work on. I like the Sprints because they are a great leveller. I will stick with them, thanks!
