Thanks guys, In summary it is not class legal to use a continuous 8mm line (bit of a daft rule but rules is rules) so this answers the question of whether an 8mm line would function in the mainsheet cleat. So its tie or whip them together.

Will look at this after I've changed the mainsheet as I have the thick and bulky Dart original and am looking at changing anyhow.

Are there also limitations on the sizes of other lines and lengths some form of reference table would be really useful.ie.jib

While I'm on the topic what is the approved new layout for the downhaul?

Hi Graham
Most of the answers are on this chat forum. The 3 to one downhaul has been put on here a number of times. Give the search engine a whirl.
How many classes have a search engine on their chat page?
If you have problems let us know.

Downhaul

Post by Martin Searle »

Graham,

For the Downhaul: The best place I found was on Shanklin's website with a nice clear picture of the layout:

Goto: http://www.shanklinsailingclub.com/
Then goto Sailing and then Hints, its on there with a parts list as well.

I think in the not too distant future I'll put something up on this site about this too. Perhaps ask Shanklin if I can borrow theirs with suitable credits of course.

You can have any length of rope off the downhaul and many still use a short one. Me, I take it to the back of the boat and tie it to the rear beam on the centreline so I can fiddle with it from the back without having to go up front. I happened to have an old laser kicking strap rope which is a pretty good fit for this application.
