Help please

Post by cedric »

Yesterday I picked another boat, 1933, which was in bits. I had ambitious plans of popping down early this morning and putting the boat together in time for the 11 am handicap race, as the race time arrived I had to panic and get the old boat rigged and change in time. It was a 2 hour race where the slowest start first and the fastest last, thus you finish in your final position, an ace race in strong winds big waves, half the dinghies dropped out and I wasn’t quite slowest cat.
Then back to putting boat together, didn’t go as well as it might as there is no bridle so was unable to put the mast up.

What is very confusing is that when I tried taking the bridle off my old boat, under the watchful eye of it's new owner, I still couldn't put the mast up because the fore shroud came right down to the jib furling bit so that the string that you use to give variable tension to the rigging could not be used. I measured old/new shrouds, the masts and both boats are set with the shroud attached to the third down hole. Thus I fail to see how it can be attached, if the missing bridle is shorter then that might work but it would mean the attachment points to the hulls should be different and yet they seemed to be the same. Attaching it straight to the furling bit would leave it slack and with no adjustment.
Has something changed between 1988 and 2000 models?

Hi Cedric
Well done for buying a newer Sprint 15.
No dimensions have changed on the boats.
I have 2 thoughts as follows:
1) Are you sure you slotted the hounds on the mast the right way up? Have a look at the manuals section on this web site. Either P8 of the rigging manual or section 6 of the parts list.
2) most of us have shortened the forestay to make room for the bit of string between the forestay and the furling drum. It is possible that John Bird never did this. A good length for the forestay is 3280mm.
Regards
Bob
PS I gather that you have sold 1201. Can you send me the Email address of the new owner, please? Do it by direct EMail so that we do not set him up for getting SPAM

Thanks Bob
I had the boats side by side on the grass so pretty sure I was getting the hounds the same way and I did compare the two lengths of all the bits that make the sprint kit but did not measure them so will try that.
If I do need to shorten the forestay how do you do that, send it somewhere or just get a shorter one made?
One of the things that came with the boat was lots of manuals ( and even a measurement cert) which is useful.
I am away from Tuesday for seven days so will not see Tom, the purchaser of 1201, for a while but will get contact details - I was delighted the boat was staying at Pevensey as I will have someone to compete with when he is not one thier Tornado, (he is half of a Tornado team and this is for when only he is about).

Hi Cedric
Most Chandlers will shorten the forestay for a few pounds. They need the press equipment. The length is not too critical. A big olive is good if they have got one (it makes more room for the string loops). I find that cutting off the old loop and forming a new loop with what is left creates a forestay of about the right length.
It is great that 1201 stays at your club creating a little fleet. No rush with the details but I like to send out the welcome note to Tom once you find out his EMail address.
Cheers

John has confirmed that he did not update his forestay so am looking into a shorter one.

Another query, I have purchased a few spare traveller plastic hoops to fit as spares incase one breaks but the end two and the middle ones are screwed in place, but the screw can't seem to be unscrewed as the outer part of the traveller slider stops the screw coming out?

Cedric,
You will have to be more specific. From what I recall the screws come out OK with a decent size screwdriver. I do not understand what is stopping them come out.
Cheers
