Re: Most Improved

[quote="Kevin Parvin"]My first Nationals at Pwllheli was Ok 31st out of 33 !!! Well not so good really. But you could say that with a smaller fleet only the hot shots turned up that year..

At Netley I came 30th out of 65 (I think), have I improved by one or 34 places ? Bit of a glass half full or empty moment. Well at the time I was pleased with my performance.

At Saundersfoot I came 27th out of 50 or so. At this rate I shall have retired before I make the top ten.

Kevin,

After 5 races you're in Joint 1st but you'd win on the tiebreak in the Most Improved category but of course there's two more races to go. This is with Netley's data being used for Thorpe Bay.

Bob Carter wrote:Just to finish the tale, sometime back Robert England proposed the following change in an EMail to me (and the committee). This is an edited version:

The procedure is as follows:

1.List only competitors who qualify through starting sufficient races in the previous year and also being present at both competitions.

2.Place them in order of success for each year. This is the basis of the category and creates “adjusted” placements.

3.Compare progress from one year to the next.

4.Place the competitor who has gained the most places at the top (and so on).

5.In the event of a tie, then position in the current championship is the deciding factor.

It is the exclusion of the other results that is important in a) making the numbers the same for both years and b) making the results valid by comparing progress only in relation to qualifying competitors (for this category).

So this is the formula we agreed and that Martin Searle has programmed and we used at Thorpe Bay. Martyn Ellis , of Thorpe Bay, was the worthy winner under the new formula. It was all calculated at the press of a button. Robert England was unfortunately sick and could not attend. Never mind Robert - you can check it out in 2010

Yeah, I'll have to make a right mess in 2009 if I'm hoping to get anywhere though. I'm glad it all worked and well done to Martyn Ellis.

I knew I wouldn't get anywhere with it this year but it was a pity I couldn't have come because it looks to have been a bit of a tough competition from looking at the results. I had thought I would try and get up the geriatrics list as far as I could and I was going to try and get as close to Erling as possible because he usually does pretty well. His result wasn't quite what I had expected this year though so God knows where I would have ended up. 10-1 Erling wins the "most improved prize next year though.

So that was Erling's strategy...............

There were a few others also appear to be on the same strategy, but the strong wind on the Monday put the kybosh on a late recovery for quite a few

Cheers
