Is there a "best" area to hire a caravan on site at Pentewan, or is each pretty much the same, well located, not too far from the beach & not too close to evening noise?

Go for the newest caravan you can, as you've less chance of mould (not something we've ever managed to avoid) and there's a nice'r' set of them near the sailing club from memory..

Best start whistling for the wind now!

Hi Charles,
That's a good location. I see they have changed quite a lot of the vans since we were last there. We have booked one in the Willows. The new booking on line system is very slick, once you have worked it out but I was pretty disappointed to find that you have to pay the whole cost on booking. I have never experienced this on a campsite before.
It also seems that quite a few of the vans do not have picnic tables, which are nice to have if the weather is nice.

You will have to wait nearer the time to decide where to take the boat and trailer. I do not know if arrangements have changed as some redevelopment is going on. In the past you could take them on the campsite and put them on the plot by your caravan. The access to the beach from the campsite is near the middle of the beach and this is good for easy boat launch or recovery for family holidays but they will not want your trailer left down at the front. Sailing events access to the beach is infront of the Sailing Club on the North side of the beach. In the past there has been quite a lot of banked sand on this side and it is a hard pull to recover the boats - people tend to help each other. The Sailing club access from the campsite is across a bridge but you cannot take cars across although you can walk a rigged boat on a trolley.
Access to the Sailing Club by car is through Pentewan village and then by driving round the harbour. Some years we have been allowed to do this to drop off the boat and trailer on an area of hard standing down towards the beach. This area is often set up as compound and sometimes someone camps there on guard. It can accommodate most of the fleet. So it may be that we can drop off our boats and trailers there before going on the campsite. If you are planning on being there for more than the Nationals week it would not be an easy place to launch from without some willing helpers.

If we need to keep boats & trailers by the caravans I think we just need to let the campsite know.

I was also surprised by the full fee payment.

We are also booked into the willows but were surprised that you had to make full payment. We have only paid a 10% deposit with the rest being automatically deducted from the credit card 6 weeks before the start of the holiday. This maybe because we did not do it online but used the old fashioned phone (online bookings were not open at the time).

I think there's a slight reduction if you book online, I paid a little less than the brochure price, if that's so it probably evens out in the end.

I have just posted a couple of Pentewan pictures in the Photos section of this website under 2009/Pentewan.
The one labeled Pentewan View clearly shows the boat parking area in the foreground with the campsite beyond. This is how it was in 2003.

Of course we do not know how the development of the club house area will affect it for 2009.

...so far possibles look like Eric Sales (stalwart 2-up), Steve Sawford (if mum will allow Daniel out to do such a dangerous sport - Karate's ok though ????!!!!), Simon Giles & his daughter, Clive Latham & his daughter.

Looks like girl power might be coming to the Sprint 15 Nats !

Wonder if any of us can get close to Steve & David Littlejohns' 3rd overall from Pentewan 2003? Someone even told me a 2 up boat had once won a Nats, but I think I'm too new / young to know who that was !

There are quite a few with young crews at Grafham if they are inclined to take them. Richard Philpott is seriously considering it. You need to work on him.
David Littlejohns is now bigger than his Dad & so Dad won't take him (he also beats his dad at Go-Karts)
The two up winner of a Nationals was in 1989 and it was girl power too. It was Linda Moss from Grafham - she was then a young engineering graduate about 22 years old - but you do know her crew - it was Stuart Snell and she probably was getting some guidance. Third place the same year was another 2-up boat with George & I on it. Another year at Saundersfoot another 2-up boat with Steve & Richard Hanby took second place and very nearly won. It went right down to the wire in the last race but they capsized near the finish letting George win again. A 2-up boat has also won the Sport Nationals (or Sprint Nationals as it then was). That was another Beaver boat with Phil & Michelle Neal on it. All these 2-up successes happend at events where the wind was strong. It is bound to happen again.

In fact, too windy. The championship was called off! It was before my time and I don't recall the year. I think George won the re-run. Bob will confirm.

Hi Andrew - well remembered - I had forgotten that one. At Abersoch in 1997 Len and Katie Flynn won sailing 2 up. Unfortunately, we only managed to do 3 races so it did not count as a Championship which in those days needed 4 races to be sailed. We have subsequently changed the rules so we only need 3 races to be sailed to stand as a championships.
The day we did sail (the first) was not grossly windy ( a light breeze bulding to a 3-4 later in the day) but then a storm moved in and prevented further racing for 2 days. Len is a good sailor who got most of his experience sailing Dart 18s. I have not heard from him for years.
