Insurance - insurance4dinghies

Post by Johnnyt »

I am sorry I missed jaycb posting regarding insurance a few weeks ago but I could not get access to the site in time.

Some of you may know me from Red Insurance when I was involved in the Dart 18 and 15 fleets. I now work for Towergate Mardon and for the last 9 months I have been working on a bespoke dinghy and catamaran policy. This is an online product and the link is as follows: -

http://www.towergatemardon.co.uk/dinghy.aspx

With my own sailing experiences from Dart 18’s, Hurricanes and now F18’s and my insurance knowledge I have tried to build a product that identifies how people use their boats. It has always been stated why should someone who clubs sails pay the same premium as someone who races on the open meeting circuit and is a higher risk. I have tried to address this by basing the premium on the use of the boat. Gold cover for Open meetings and National Championships, Silver cover for just club racing and bronze cover for just cruising. I have also included some additional covers such as cover for personal effects such as dry suits and sailing watches and event cancellation cover whereby if a open meeting is cancelled due to too much or too little wind we will refund the entry fee. The policy still extends to anyone using the craft with the owner’s permission without naming them and there is no endorsement to take the mast down during the winter.

I have run a quote for a Sprint 15 through the web site and based on a value of £3,000.00 we would quote a premium of £73.37 for gold cover and £64.46 for silver cover. For the cruising fraternity the premium would be £57.87. We can reduce the premium by a further 10% if the class association allow us to put a link on the Sprint 15 web site so all the members benefit from this discount but this will need to be a decision from the association committee. We use the class association repairers such as Steve Sawford or Brian Phipps and in the event of a claim if possible genuine Dart 15 parts are used.

Please go on the site and have a look. Any feed back would be most welcome either through the site or contact me directly my email.

New policies

Post by Steve Willis »

Welcome John,

Nice to see the new range of policies that you told me about is now coming active. I have been working at SSC for the last 10 days on our new solar water heating system and have had two 'walk in' new members turn up.

I have told them to get in touch with you as neither currently has boat insurance and it is a requirement of membership. Three dinghies between them.

Best wishes

Steve

Commercialisation of clubs' websites seems to be in Vogue. I know my club is looking into it. Somehow, there is a difference between links and banners.

Banners are much more "in your face", which presents clubs with a greater wheeze to raise funds, than a mere link.

For example, I don't think Volvo would be satisfied with a link. So if my club allowed Volvo to have a banner, it would want some money.

Hi John

Its great to see some competition in the insurance market, but please expand on the silver rate, what happens at NDYC when I want to do the Nationals or open event at my own club, do I need to upgrade to Gold. Because as I see it if I have to upgrade, the pricing structure it is of no benefit as most people do thier own club event.

As always John, your best mate

John

Great news, Some years ago I was insured By Red insurance, but lost there details of the change to Towergate/Mardon so insured with Craftinsure to get much needed cover (Racing that weekend) in fact just 6 hours away.

Towergate/Mardon caught up with me last year and quoted a very high figure 3 Digits before the decimal point, I cant remember what but well over the £73.37 for your gold cover which seems about right to me.

does your cover include transit whilst on trailer, if so what about me and my son Ben as we travel with two boats inverted on a trailer.
At the moment my car insurance covers me whilst trailing so its not too big a deal.

Both insurances for myself and Ben are due about May I think

Hi John,

I have added the link and one of the banners you sent Steve W. to the links page of the Seasalter SC website (I manage that too now!).

Goto http://www.seasaltersc.org.uk and click Links.

Doubtless Steve will email you this info.
