Interesting uses for old bits of boat!

Post by RobBowen »

So anyway, today as I was epoxying 2 halves of a split old mainsail batten to the bottom of my newly built sledge to make some super slidy runners I started looking around our house for all the random things I have used old bits of boat for, including the mirror mast that holds up our 4:1 purchase washing line and also the fireball mainsail that we shade under in the summer...

It keeps me amused, maybe other people do similar recycling things? A prize of a full sized model of the Eiffel Tower made purely out of 2nd hand 15 masts to the most inventive!

Yes my work is shut because of the snow and yes, I have got too much time on my hands!

I recently unearthed an old brass padlock which I now use on our side gate.

I use odd bits of rope for the garden. It lasts much longer than the stuff you buy at garden centres.

Old toe straps make excellent tree-ties: they don't cut into the bark.

I have a weather vane mounted on a pole in my garden. The vane was made from a broken wind hawk.

A friend made a flagpole from an old mast. The flagpole stood in his front garden for everyone to see. He subsequently emigrated to the US, where he does the same. Controversially, on 4th July, he flies the Stars and Stripes at half-mast.

Not sure if this really counts, but the spinnaker pole on my (sorry to mention it here) Hobie Pacific is the mast from a Laser.

A weak link I know but I need a reason to post to see if I can move up from Able Seaman :)

I wrote a tirade of posts to move up from Able Seaman - why does it matter to us I wonder!?

Currently using 2 topper Kicking Straps and a topper boom to hang bike wheels off in the shed as well!

Good job this was removed from your boat. It would definitely slow you down .

Why not cut it in half and make a sun bathing/swimming platform!

That's amazing! It's a wonder that anyone could think of such a thing.
