Anyone know of the Hellcat 12 ?

Post by Mike Godwin »

We have just acquired the above from a member who has failed to pay their berthing fees, but it is not in too good a condition, who makes it and where can spares be obtained ? we want to use it as part of our Clubs RYA Level 1 & 2 Training as an intro into Catamaran sailing for those who have not considered purchasing a Catamaran ( makes the next step to purchase a Dart 15 easier ! ) It will be used on an Inland pond the Club owns and not Seaford bay where we usually sail.
Thanks for any info.

Hi Mike

I remember the Hellcat, if memory serves it came from Australia or South Africa, it was a family run business that did all the shows in Europe for a couple of years then it just died away never to be heard of again.

This was probably more than 15 years ago.

I am surprised you've found one as I thought they hadn't sold any, and saying that I am positive that spares will not be available anywhere.

Hope this helps

Best Regards

Hi Mike, The name "Hellcat" in catamarans goes back some years, the name first came to fame as the 1st C-class catamaran, designed by Rod Macalpine Downey and built by Reg White in 1962 of which there were 3 or 4 versions as the design developed.
The nearest named catamaran still around is the Halcat, which is still made in South Africa by Collins Fiber Glass, they now only produce the 14ft version , the sail emblem is a black cat.
Some other catamarans that have a similar skeg or asymetrical hull shape .
Windrush catamaran (Austrailian)
Hawk Surf Cat (Australian)
Hope that helps

Mike

Good idea getting a club boat to encourage newbies to have a go in a cat.

I'm plannig to do the same at Halifax, but with either a S15 or a D18, or both.

Do you have any Cat Instructors at NSSC?

Hi Charles,
Both Ray and I are RYA qualified multihull instructors. We regularly take cat conversion (L1 & L2) RYA approved courses at CSC (2days). The club has 3 training cats - 2 Dart 16s and a Topper 16CX (twin wire and asymmetric). It's one of the best ways to introduce cat sailing. We also do taster sessions - 2 hours of fun. It seems to work. Hopefully another recruit to the S15 fleet after today. The guy is on the hunt for a boat now. :D
