Thinking about a Dart 15 [Martin]

Planning to sail regularly at Wells Next the Sea in North Norfolk and thinking about a suitable boat. Given that there is not a huge depth of water either side the deep water channel I wonder if a Dart 15 might be suitable? I am concerned, though, about the boat's ability to tack in the confines of the harbour where it can get a bit crowded and the tide can be a bit quick. Have sailed a 505, Fireball and Laser 2 there in the past but find the long foils can be a problem. Don't particularly want to race, just have some fun blasting! Any thoughts?

More thoughts about a Dart 15 [Dartful Codger 3]

Hi Martin
Don't have any hang-ups about tacking a Dart 15. The only time they are slow is when there is hardly any wind, but then you probably wouldn't be sailing any dinghy in those conditions, and you can always get the praddle (paddle) out of the storage compartment in each hull if necessary to assist your manoevres .
One tip I can offer if you are concerned about tacking :-
Push the tiller steadily but firmly until you have 'full lock on', and at the same time, move your body weight aft during the tack. This has the effect of lifting the bow to reduce the bite from the sharp 'V' of the hull for'ard. The hulls will then pivot round more quickly nearer the points of the skegs. When executed properly, it really doesn't take up much more space to do than a monohull .
Another obvious advantage that the Dart 15 has in your particular circumstances is that you don't have to worry about lack of water, since it will sail in less than 2 feet depth, but the rudders should kick up for safety if hitting an obstruction.
A great boat all round which you can sail 1-up/2-up, main, jib or trapeze, or even just sun-bathe on if you are becalmed or run out of water - no balancing required.
One final point - these are exhilarating craft to sail, and I am doubtful whether you could 'potter' about in it for long before getting the urge to race it, which is where the fun really starts !
In the meantime - good hunting and I admire your choice .

Dart 15 Demos [Bob]

Post by Archive »

Bob replied:

Hi Martin,
Don't take our word for it - come for a ride in one. We are doing a free Demo Day to give rides to potential Dart 15 sailors at Grafham on 11 May. We will be giving rides to those that signed up at Alexandra Palace.
No high pressure sales techniques - this is just members of the Dart 15 Association giving rides / demos in their own boats.
Send me an Email note if you want to come.
Cheers
Bob

Dart 15 Demos [Martin]

Thanks for the offer. Sadly cannot make the day at Grafham as it clashes with Club Training event. I was at Draycote yesterday for a conference and noticed a few out sailing. Have therefore posted a notice on their website to see if I can hitch a ride with someone.
