Hi guys thanks for your advice regarding my main sail problems.
On checking I think the hook had been bent closer to the track at some time but a little persuasion with a pair of mole grips soon put this right.
A combination of the above and the other suggestions seemed to ensure the sail dropped first time after this weekends sailing.
