On a final note David at WH insures our three Cats my 15 in insured for my son & I, my Wife's 15 is insured for son, daughter wife & myself. Its as David says it what you require.
The incidents following which I have had to sail a member's boat back ashore have been when older or inexperienced members have capsized and spent too long getting their boats back up (and in two cases were unable to climb back aboard).
In each case I deemed it sensible for them to be taken ashore to warm up / rest and for me to sail their boat back - once alone and once with the original crew who was not a competent helm. If I had trouble with the shoreline I would sail straight up the beach (those at last year's SSC TT may remember my executing this after our hairy sailing).
It does not take extreme weather for this sort of incident to occur. Yes if conditions were extreme we would most likely anchor the boat and place a 'Crew Safe' label on it whilst returning the crew ashore. Our PBs carry spare boat anchors and 'crew safe' labels. Better than slowly towing a boat back if its crew are injured or hypothermic.
The reason we are carefully scrutinising the Club insurance is to make sure both PB crews and RO are covered for all their actions whilst acting as duty officers of the club. The club insurance, through the RYA, changed a couple of years ago to a new policy and we just want to have some plain English notes for everyone to know how they stand in various circumstances - then they can make informed decisions.
