Hello Bob,

I would rather sail with a jib, but no point in doing it to race two others while everybody else is enjoying themselves in a big fleet. With the upwind/downwind courses we were sailing, a jib would have been little advantage anyway.

Looking forward to Yaverland.

Hi Bob,

At the first (and sometimes second) Summer TT I always consider sailing Sport Mode in order to get in some serious practice prior to the Sport Nationals - but only if I have been in good health and injury free for some time. But Marconi is different due to restricted choice of course - if the wind is (forecast to be) close to N or to S then no course there has much beating/running and there will probably be lots of reaching. So I reckon that I will usually sail Sport Mode there if the wind is expected to suit Sport Mode, and then to continue sailing Sport Mode for most of the Summer TTs.

As Liam said, on the first day the light wind direction restricted courses to a longish beat, a short reach across the Blackwater and a long run, and the wind forecast for Sunday was also light. Sailing Sport Mode on the old Handicap would have been a poor decision if you wanted a good handicap result.

If the wind had been in a more suitable direction and a bit stronger then I might have sailed Sport Mode even on the new Handicap and even though I haven't enjoyed the best of health recently - sailing Sport Mode reminds me of my younger days, even though it tends to revive an old shoulder injury ......

PS I don't recall Stewart Pegum sailing Sport Mode very often at TTs, if ever he has.

Sounds reasonable. It is hard to make Sport mode pay unless there are good size reaches.
I thought Stewart was inclined to sail Sport mode at times, but doubtless he will straighten us out when he reads this

I would always prefer to sail sport mode but would rather put up with uni rig than race on handicap and let the result be decided on the wind strength and how long the race officer makes the reaches. Since most people seem to prefer uni I'd say make 3 TTs uni only and 1 sport only.

Why don't you come and try your hand at Yaverland on 17-19 May? It would be great to see you.
You could even make up a Gurnard team if Paul Tanner and Robin Leather are game.

There was a rumour at Marconi that Paul was thinking of sailing at Yaverland.

It was assumed that Robin would sail, as Robin is also a member at Shanklin..... where will his Club priorities lie?
