I have to replace one (though will do both) of the chainplates on the bow as it is cracked from the leading edge to the screwhole.
I have received two new ones from the Laser Centre but they seem to be twice the thickness of the originals and will take a lot of effort to bend into shape. Is there any difference between the D15 & D18 chainplates? Have I got the wrong ones? Thanks.

Hi,

On newer boats, they are fitted with these thicker chainplates because in time they can fail.

This is usually caused by pulling the bost while on the trolley. If the bridle wires are pulled too closed to the chainplate, it twists them.

Robin,
That's great, thanks! I'll go ahead and fit them now. (keeping my fingers crossed that the fittings inside stay put!)

I've just done this job myself. It's best if you remove only 2 of the screws, and only slacken the 3rd. You can then swivel the chainplate 90 degrees, this allows you to fit the new chainplate with 1 screw into 1 of the vacant holes. Then you can safely remove the last screw in the old chainplate and once its removed, swivel the new chainplate into position. This way the backing is always held by at least 1 screw.

PS Robin Leather is 100% correct. The new thicker ones are much better.

You're right Paul, that was my old boat.
I new it was up for sale, the thing that really surprised me was that the advertised price was same as it was when I sold it 3 years ago !
That means 3 years of sailing and no depreciation, I wish my car did that.

What a cheek you've got !
I saw the underside of your boat at QM.
Are you trying to keep the weight down by scraping off all that gelcoat?

Bob replied:

I reckon that you need to change your chainplates because the Queen Mary 45 degree walls. I can just see you heaving your boat up and down that by the chainplates! I'm surprized that the front section of the bows have not come off in your hands!!
Cheers, Bob
PS my skegs are perfection itself.
