I am currently sailing a Laser Vortex but want to change to a boat which I can race two up occasionally with my 14 year old son. I would like to be active on the open circuit in either configuration. There appear to be three race set up's main only, main with jib and main jib and spinnaker.I quite like the idea of assymetric sailing.

How active is the assymetric Sprint 15 circuit and can this be sailed competitively two up (total weight less than 20 stone)as well as single handed.

Finally is there anyone out there would be interested in part exchange of a Laser Vortex worth around ?2300 for a good Sprint 15 (assymetric) ?3500 ish (Vortex plus around ?1500 cash)

Graham,

There is no Sprint 15 Pacing Class with any kind of spinnaker! All that has happened is that a few owners have tried out a number of different ways of adding a large foresail for use off wind. None has been developed further than for interest, fun - and as far as I know all have dropped their experimentation.

With the Sprint 15 there are 2 Racing Classes, one of which offers 2 alternatives. I expect these Classes will get their new names next year (when the RYA issue PYs for 20006), so I am showing both the current and new nameas.

Sprint 15 (Dart 15) PY 916

Option 1 - unarig singlehander, no trapeze
Option 2 - main + jib, 2 up, no trapeze

Sprint 15 Sport (Dart 15 Sprint) PY 882

Main + jib + trapeze, singlehander or 2 up

If you look through recent Chat you'll find some extensive chat on the subject of the use of the same PY for the 2 options under Sprint 15 (started by Nick on 19/10/2005 with the heading "running".) In particular you'll find a note by Bob Carter which includes advice that the optimum weight for the 2 up option is reckoned to be around 17 stone.....

I doubt that you'll find a Sprint 15 sailor wanting to exchange his cat for a Vortex, but there's naught as queer as folk! You may well have to sell the Vortex separately.

Best wishes

George

Hi Graham
A couple of thoughts
1)We can organise you a test sail on a Sprint 15 at a club near you if you are interested.
2)We could put a Wanted advert in our for sale section of this web site to see if anyone wants to do the part exchange.
Regards
Bob Carter

Graham,
As discussed on Sunday at Draycote, anytime I am up at Draycote come and have a go.

I had the same dilemma abot sailing one or two up occasionally. I have not competed on the national circuit but it would be more fun to compete more regularly against another sprint 15.

As you saw on Sunday there were four of us out [albeit two with borrowed boats]. We were just practicing starts and and a quick circuit.

send me an email if you want to have a go soon and we can arrange to meet.
