I'm going to make a start this weekend to repair some damage to the skegs where they have bounced on the unpadded part of my trailer.
Any tips?

Have you tried putting Skegs into the search engine on this chat page? As I recall there is quite a lot on these pages. It is quite easy and straightforward. The most important thing is to plan it on a dry weekend when you can have the boat upside-down for a day or two. You also need to have some other things to do while the gelcoat is setting. Pick out all the loose stuff and clean up & rough up the areas to address very thoroughly. Do not expect to do it in a single coat. Mask off the adjacent areas where you do not want the gelcoat to spread to. Shape up with course Wet & Dry (e.g 240) with water between coats. After the final coat work down the grades of wet & dry doubling the grade # (eg 240,400,800,1200)all using water.
Best of Luck
