On the old style Tiller Bar there is at each end a plastic insert that fits through the aluminum bar the long pin on the tiller arm then fits in to it.

The question is, is the plastic insert a push fit or what.

It's all news to me.
The Conbar on the old boats had no plastic bushes at the ends. There was a big hole which the pin on the tiller fitted right through - it was very loose and floppy. The newer boats (after about 1500) introduced the plastic end pieces to the conbar and the shorter pins on the tillers. These plastic bits are held in place with a single rivet but they need to also be sealed with silicon sealant.

Hi Bob it's Charlie s boat 834, and there are plastic inserts at each end. Thought that they were the normal thing.

Will look into it some more, will also try and get a picture to you.

It sounds like the usual problem of the holes in the con bar getting oversize due to wear against the stainless steel pin. I reamed mine out and inserted some plastic tubes for one season. Yours sounds like that has also been done.

In the end I bought the new plastic ends and short pins for the rudders and converted it - with lots of careful measuring to get the length right.

I must now get round to replacing the centre swivel with the rubber UJ version. We bought a modern con bar and tiller from e-bay last year and use that on one of boats - it is so much better than my old swively thing.

Hi Steve , have managed to press out the 2 inserts and have got some one with the equipment to drill the 3 vertical holes. So if I can get the inserts back all should be OK.
Yes I agree it would have been easier and more cost efective in the long run if they had gone down the NEW tiller bar route.
