Hi All

I have found the PY for the Sting as 888 and the Sprint 15 sport 883 with the standard rig 916. :o
I would think that they may have mixed up the two boats or the sting py is wrong as it is ment to be the faster boat ?
What do You think

Its more probably the old number thats been around for years and without any\or very few returns they thus probably haven't updated it.

The latest number for the Sting was 860.

I have no knowledge of the 888 rating.

Cheers

Yes ,860 sounds more like it .
I found the Sting Py from google .
As I remember the old Py Used to be 97 uni,93 sprint and 91 sting and was not that long ago converted to the new system.

I've never seen reference to the Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System. Is that used at all. Here in Spain its the only one used. They refer to Dart 15 Cat boat, Dart 15 Sprint and Dart 15 GTI? I assume they refer to one crew main sail; one crew main sail + jib; two crew main + jib.

SCHRS is used at some clubs here in the UK but all our TT events etc use the PY system.

Two-Up with no Trapeeze should have the same rating as One Crew and main only.

Could you post the SCHRS figures used in Spain?

Thanks,

Yes SCHRS is used extensively in the UK on all big Catamaran events where there are many classes in attendance. It is a formula based system and all the ratings can by found on the following link:

http://www.schrs.com/index.php?page=ratings

As many Catamarans have various rigs and also there are many which do not have a large enough existing fleets and hence returns to the RYA to establish a PY rating many clubs use SCHRS. With SCHRS as soon as a boat is built and measured you can get a SCHRS rating. Thus it is very convenient - especially in the case of new boats. Texel in the Netherlands started the system, which is broardly similar across Europe.

In the Sprint 15 class we already have PY numbers as the boat is now 30 years old and we have PY ratings for all formats based on actual race results. We opt to use PY and not SCHRS ratings because the PY has fair ratings between Sport mode and standard mode - thus 883 and 916 are about right. Thus we can have reasonably fair handicap races between these 2 formats. In SCHRS the standard mode has a reasonable rating but the Sport mode is rated as a much faster boat than it actually is. It is a quirk of the formula. There is nothing that can be done about it, without a formula change, which is not on the cards. Thus to give our Sport Sailors a fair chance we use PY for our events.
The other advantage of PY is that you can have handicap racing with monohulls - this is not an option with SCHRS as there is no monohull equivalent.

Bob

PS If you enter an inter catamaran race with a Sprint 15 it is better to sail it standard mode and not Sport mode. 2-up boats also get a more favourable rating - which is probably more fair than PY (another quirk as I'm sure that the RYA PY system cannot differentiate between 1-up and 2-up configurations - all the returns will be grouped together for these variations.

Ahh knew Bob would explain it further!

On that page the Dart 15 GTI rating has 1 person on the trapeeze but 2 crew. Thus its a rating that isn't really covered by the class rules.

Thus I would say that there isn't a Dart 15 Two-Up rating in the usual sense ie 2 crew NO trapeeze (I don't know how much difference to the rating that makes though, if any). So it maybe an interesting excercise to try and get that rating created, one for Bob or Nick me thinks.

Thanks to Bob and Martin for the information. We use the tables as indicated on the link to SCHRS. I noticed that in the FAQ section they suggest the rating should be multiplied by 686 to give a 'PY look-alike'. This gives 905.52 for the standard Sprint 15 and 835.54 for the Sport mode. On casual reading of the calculation of the ratings, it seems the trapeze gives a big boost to the rating. Maybe it has less effect on the Sprint 15. Has anybody compared hiking to trapezing using only the main?
