Lily is getting bored of sailing with her Dad and would like to branch out on her own.

She can sail a Pico but likes the idea of a Cat.

Does anyone know what the Dart 12 is like ?

Could it be sailed 2Up by a couple of 11 year olds ?

Are there any about ?

There is the Topaz 12 but with no second hand market £4k seems alot to spend.

They only made a few so they are pretty rare. Steve Sawford has one so he is the best guy to ask.

Hi Simon, we sailed a Hobie 13 out in Portugal on holiday - much less banana shaped than a 14 or 16, and a fairly managable rig. That might be an option.

I'm sure you have considered it, but we plan on cutting the bottom 2 panels off an old mainsail for Hannah to be able to sail Batcat when she's a bit less likely to try to ram a Redjet Ferry with it!

Hi Simon, I am certain (from experience) 2 x 11year olds can sail a Sprint 15 and right it if they capsize provided they have they are using the right light team techniqes. If you have a old Sprint 15 mainsail, I would suggest you make a reefing point to reduce mainsail area intially and when needed and add a float pack when reefed. If you need the reef point measurement I can send that to you. We use a specially cut training mainsail we can reef on both the dart18 and sprint15 for training, they are not class legal..
Course you could hand your current boat over to this budding new Sprint15 sailor and buy a brand new one !!! or do it the other way round!!!!!

I sailed Steve Sawford's 12 last year while he fixed my boat after Pentewan.

They are only a little smaller than the 15 (a bit longer than 12' I think) & sail quite nicely. When I sailed it at my club with DX sail I didn't feel it was much slower than my 15.

Lily would be able to manage the 12, probably up to a F3, then it would just depend how fearless she is! With 2 sails I'm sure the boat would be quite fun with a crew & with twice the weight it would also be right-able.

Have a chat with Steve & look at the 12 x 2 posting too.
