This subject crops up on the forum quite often but I've noticed my hulls stay nice and dry while sailing upright in any wind (a sponge full each side at most), but if I do what I did yesterday and capsize completely over, once recovered my hulls take on a fare bit of water (ten or more sponges each side)
I replaced the rear hatch mounts and covers a couple of years ago and I have good sealing rings each side. Can water still get in under the mount if the sealant has failed between mount and hull. Is it worth applying a thin bead of sealant around each mount or should I drill out all the rivets and re-apply the mounts.
I had the cat upright quickly and don't think water could get in so rapidly any other place.

Kevin, This is fairly normal. The breather is in the front beam socket so is underwater when the boat is inverted. If you replaced the hatch cover mounting rings without bedding them on sealant it is highly likely that some leakage happens around there. The other common leakage site is the tramp track rivets. Make sure that there are no missing rivets or rivets without the nail head blocking up the rivet hole. I used to seal all these rivets with a little transparent silicon sealer on the rivet head.

when i had 1616 i had a simple capsize, when i went to get the boat upright i couldnt. the mast just wouldnt lift above water. then it went bows up and then i was in trouble as i had drifted over peverill legde on a ebb tide. i probtly got rescued by the RNLI as the boat was doing its upmost to sink.
the hulls were full of water. not a pleasant experience in the end.

So when the cat goes over don't hang about, right it prompt.

never knew where 1616 ended up. i know it was sold to someone in Poole.
