Gelcoating

Post by SSCBen »

A question probably for Steve Salford,
Is it a good idea to put gelcoat over wood? I have a sick wooden Marauder in my shed which could do with that sort of thing.
Sorry to go off the Sprint 15 topic, but i need to know

Hi Ben

It is not a good idea to paint gelcoat straight to the wood surface as when the wood flexes and expands the gel will flake off like rasor blades.
You would have to laminate the area with 1 layer of glass and resin then paint on a Flow coat (Gel with a wax additive to leave a non sticky satin finish)
The best way is to apply a high quality varnish, the guys at www.marineware.com (023 8033 9667) offer epoxy finishes for wood.
I will use them for advise on the decks of my 1978 Unicorn.

Hope this helps

Cheers Steve,
I already have some paint on gelcoat with the wax in it so i'll put in some glass mat first and then the gelcoat.
Many thanks for the info,
Ben
