Thought everyone might like a laugh at this, its Team Alinghi (AC Team) capsizing their Extreme 40 practice boat:

Shows its not only the 15 that can invert when you capsize it! (loose 15 related reason for post )

OK Martin that all looks very cool and high speed but I quite like my little 15. Things seem to happen pretty quickly on board when the wind is blowing and the downwind mark is approaching (suddenly much faster than expected). I'd like to see some onboard video from either the base of the mast looking backwards or from between the rudders looking forwards taken on a Sprint 15 with a top helm sailing in a race. Could you arrange this Martin? I've seen headcam stuff on a Dart 18 and that's pretty good.

Perhaps we could get a link to something like this (if it's possible) on this website.

Its funny you mention that because I do have a plan to use video on this site perhaps mainly in the tips to section to illustrate things like tacking, capsizing and such like.

Actually I do have a headcam for just something like this and tried it out the week before the Seasalter TT on a medium wind race, worked quite well I attached it to the front beam looking forwards. I was a bit reluctant to try it on the really wavey TT we had since it'll probably have got washed away. But I need to do a few more experiments with camera angles and such like before I'll go live with anything but its looking promising.

As for getting a top helm to give it a go I could always attach it too Kevin Dutch's boat.

Corr - I don't fancy the drop from the top hull when it is on it's side. Neither do they, judging by the way they are hanging of to the (netting) trampoline..................

So now Joan is caught on CCTV with ANPR whilst afloat (842 towards the end).

What with the camcorder on the finish line and now on board cams my idea of fitting transponders in mast heads ofall our boats so we can 'sense' them crossing the line is no longer too far off. Then we can have fully automated races - to be followed in time by the 'remote control options pack' so we can sail from the bar.

Seriously though. Martin if you need any brackets made up let me know. I was going to try my waterproof Optio (it will do about 30 minutes video) and am thinking where to mount it.

I had to chop off about 30 minutes of me tail chasing you from the video!

I plan to give various attachment points a go:

1) Base of mast looking back
2) Front Beam looking towards other hull
3) Mast head looking Down (vertigo alert!)
4) Mast head looking forwards and then backwards
5) Try it with a cycle crash hat for the true headcam stylie experience

I might try one of the mast head ones on Sunday since I need to turn it over to see if there is a leak in the hulls, I had tons of water inboard from last weekend.

Steve Tunnacliffe had one of those head band mounted LED torches for setting up their tent in the dark at the TT - could use something like that rather than the cycling crash hat.

If you do use the hat I must get a picture of you.................

I thought of trying my canoeing helmet - that I use for land yachting so you can get your own back

Must dash, herself wants a sail this afternoon (6mph NNW at present so hoping for a sea breeze by the time we get water).

Then we can see what you are looking at (don't move your head too much though otherwise I'll get sea sick!) Also if you "study" Steve whilst he's just ahead of you then we can see what he's up to - alternatively, can you get close enough to Kevin Dutch in a blow and then we can watch him playing the mainsheet

I'll probably sneek up one day and attach it to Kevin's boat somewhere. Alternatively he can always be the one wearing the crash hat!

It'll be interesting to see where one actually looks during sailing because I don't think I spend a vast amount of time actually looking where one is going rather I'm checking wind direction, checking for seaweed on rudders, looking at watch\GPS, mainsheet\traveller position, looking around for others, monitoring bow up\down and various other tasks. So I suspect that'll be quite a hectic viewpoint!

I have improved the player part of this page, it now looks much more like the BBC iPlayer and also provides the ability to view full screen. So I'm now quite happy with it, it does mean that you need to have the Flash plugin from Adobe installed in your browser though.

My next main part of this project is to re-vamp the Tips pages to facilitate easy publishing and the ability to include the videos as links or as clickable play items. There won't be a facility to allow people to add their own videos since thats a legal minefield.

Then I can open the "Searle Movie Productions Inc" studio's and produce the content! I'll probably get some footage during the Seasalter Sprint 15 Teach-In.

I found a head harness torch on Faversham market this morning for £2 and bought one. It comprises elasticated head band and 'over the head' adjustable straps with a torch mounted on a strong polythene frame.

I will bring it to the Club for Saturday sailing so you can have a look - might be adaptable for head cam man.

Perhaps we should get Kevin to wear it backwards - so we can see ourselves disappearing behind.

Looks like NW F4 and rain for Saturday though - more waves!!!!!!!!!!
