The Cartoon Book

Post by George Love »

Since producing the cartoon book entitled "Catch You on the Water" - The Cartoon Years by Phil Breeze, I have been asked if it can be made available for purchase by members. Whilst it was produced first and foremost for Sissy Dewhirst and family, they are more than happy for it to go on 'general release'. So if anyone would like to have a copy, I shall be pleased to arrange it.
Just to recap, it contains more than 100 cartoons almost all of which were produced by Phil over the last two decades and must represent an almost complete record of all he has ever produced up to May 2013. The book is 76 pages and is available in 3 formats which I'll describe below with the associated cost of each. I will have to place the order and pay up front as it is an online arrangement. The book is actually printed somewhere in Holland, I think. It is produced by "Blurb". The cost for each format includes carriage to UK and I have added £3.00 on top to cover the cost of me packaging it and posting to you after I have received the order. If I don't have to post it on - e.g. I can give it to you in person at an event - the price will be less the £3.00. Also if the order is large enough there is a potential 10% approx. discount on the prices quoted. So, the prices quoted should be the maximum and the formats are:
1. Hard Cover image wrapped : total cost £39.00
2. Hard Cover with coloured dust jacket : total cost £37.00
3. Soft Cover : total cost £30.00
You can check out how each look if you use the following link and scroll down to "The anatomy of a Blurb book" near the bottom of the page.
http://www.blurb.co.uk/products
My personal preference is format 2 because in this version, unlike the other two, the inside flaps of the dust jacket at both front and back contain some commentary on Phil which doesn't appear in formats 1 or 3.
So, how to order? I suggest that we arrange as follows:
You send me a cheque made payable to me for the format of book you would like and a note of your postal address. Please also send a note of your email address and phone no. in case I need to contact you. I will also confirm receipt of your cheque by email. (This means I won't have to cover the cost of the order personally which could be a substantial sum, reimbursement of which I may end up chasing - hope that's all OK with everyone). I will wait approximately one month from now to see how many requests I get and then place the order. Further orders can always follow if needed but hopefully a month is long enough for those interested to read this post and action.
My postal address is:
49, Bridle Lane,
Lower Hartshay,
Ripley,
Derbyshire DE5 3RQ
If there are any questions you can email me at : newsletter@sprint15.com
I look forward to hearing from you :D
(P.S. if you include a sticky label with your name and address on it when you send your cheque, that would make return posting out to you much easier for me)

Just a P.S. to my first post.
I am looking at ways to make the book available as an eBook. So watch this space for further details. :)

I have now arranged for the Cartoon Book to be available as an eBook in two formats as follows with commentary on each:
1. An iOS format for Apple products - iPod touch, iMac, iPad, etc.
Comment : I can provide a download link and as long as your device has the iBook app. (free to download from Apple) it will work. (I have tested it on my own iPad).
2.A pdf format which I believe will work on Kindle, Android tablets, Microsoft, etc.
Comment : The pdf file is around 37meg. so I can't email it due to 25meg. limit on my outbox. I would, therefore, have to provide it on CD by post.
(This has been arranged following a question from Mark Bunyan - thanks, Mark, for raising it and your subsequent advice/comments).
Having given this some more thought, I am proposing to make a nominal charge for each despite the fact that the actual cost so far to set this up is only around £10 and the costs going forward will still be minimal e.g. CD, envelope & postage for 2. above. I am proposing a charge of £6.00 for either format of the eBook and any money left over after deducting of costs goes to a charity to be nominated by Sissy Dewhirst. Sissy has intimated she likes the idea. After all, had we not lost Nick, the book would probably not have been produced. This does mean that only those who order an eBook will be making a charitable donation in effect but I think this is reasonable given the more serious cost of the standard printed books. This does not, however, prevent those ordering a standard printed book contributing more than the published prices as noted in my first post above as a 'voluntary' donation if they wish.
So how do you order an eBook?
In the case of 1. above - you send me a cheque for £6.00 with a note of your email address and requesting an iOS ebook and I email you the link to download it. In this case, you will undertake to not pass on the link to others - which would be a bit unfair.
For 2. above - you send me a cheque for £6.00 with a note of your postal address and request for pdf copy and I put it on a CD and send it back to you. In this case you undertake not to copy the CD to others.
It's also worth noting that I could just arrange for anyone to buy any of the formats (hard or soft) of the book online but I think this could be more of a hassle for me setting up pay accounts and any cost benefit of larger orders would not be available to those ordering hard copies.

I'd be most grateful for any thoughts/comments on this in case I've not thought of something vital or missed the point, etc.
Cheers

Just a further thought. In the case of the pdf copy for an eBook - if you would like to send a blank CD and suitable sae with 60p for postage added, all of your £6.00 will go to charity :)

Just a bit more info. on this.
Sissy has intimated that she would like any charitable proceeds to go to the Alzheimer's Society. This was the charity that was nominated at Nick's funeral.
As noted earlier, most of the £6 cost of the eBooks can be so directed.
For the hard copies, the prices given are very much cost and I appreciate they are not an insubstantial amount - BUT - if anyone ordering a hard copy would like to make a voluntary donation of a few pounds extra, I will ensure that it is put into the charity pot. :D 'Tis the season of goodwill
I'll keep you all posted on the total accrued.
Thanks all in anticipation.

Hi All and a very Happy New Year to you and yours.
I have received a few orders for the Cartoon book but thought I'd give this final call to anyone who wants a copy to be included in the batch I'm about to order.
There are one or two folks who said they would like one but have not confirmed an order. This doesn't mean that you can't order a copy sometime in the future but the more I can order in one batch, the cheaper it is (and the easier it is for me).
So here's a final call. I'll wait two more weeks (to 17 January) before placing the order, so if you would like a copy, all the details on how to get one are in my earlier postings.
The comments above relate more to the hard copies as I can make electronic versions available anytime. :)
Cheers

To all of you who purchased a copy of the book in either hard or electronic copy - A BIG THANK YOU!
After I had deducted all the costs of purchasing the copies, postage, etc., there was a total of £110 left over :D . This has been sent to Sissy Dewhirst and she has forwarded it to The Alzheimer's Society who have expressed their gratitude for the donation.
This was the charity that was cited at Nick's funeral - so a worthy cause indeed. Your generosity is much appreciated as expressed in a note I received from Sissy and The Society too.
More copies of the book can be made available - just get in touch with me as my earlier postings - and if you would like to make a donation when you place your order, it will also go to a worthy cause.
Well done, folks :D and I hope you've had a good laugh  whilst taking a trip down memory lane courtesy of our one and only Phil Breeze 8)
If you've not yet received your copy, fear not, it's on its way to you.
