Forum downtime [Jonathan]

Hi,

Sorry the chat pages have been down for a few days. We have been having lots of spam messages posted to the forum and I needed to put in place some better protection.

Interestingly, this latest attack involved trying to post links to the spammers websites as replies to old messages. The spammers idea is not to actually get people visiting the Sprint 15 website to go to the spammers websites, but to use the fact that the Sprint 15 website appears high in Google rankings. If your website is linked from other popular websites, then the search engines will correspondingly bump your website up the rankings.

I have some further measures available if the latest updates don't work...

Hi Jonathan,
Just a few words of thanks for the excellent service you provide for the Association.
If you are held in high esteem with Google, then that says it all.
I'm sure many of us have missed the availability of the chat pages this week, albeit for a very good reason, but your valuable expertise ensures our site is monitored and managed with a very high degree of professionalism, and we should all be indebted to you for that service, which is paramount in promoting the class, as it continues to go from strength to strength.
Keep up the good - nay 'BRILLIANT' work !

Spam - the real cause [Bob]

Bob replied:

Jonathan's explanation is probably correct but the version I like to believe is that the it was caused by the rush of attention resulting in Ray Gall giving Gordon Goldstone's bed to Erling for the coming Carsington Open Meeting. This has caused such hilarity in the fleet that our hit rate has gone sky high.
Whatever the cause - well done Jonathan for fixing it.
