I heard you could use either type of hook but that if you drowned by not using the quick release type then you wern't allowed to lodge a protest.

I think that rule would become a bit redundant, unless you're two up and your crew snuffs it!

More seriously though, is it meant to be a hook that breaks off when under mass load or just breaks off when you hit the big red quick release button?

Any tips on where to buy these from for a reasonable price? Dinghy show in March? How much are these likely to cost?

The hook is released from the harness when you hit the big red button, or pull the release cord depending on the particular type. A spare hook carried on your person would enable you to complete the race, or sail home.
RWO and Seasure both produce quick release hooks so you can update an old harness. And probably other manufacturers also. Prices would appear to be ?50+, and it may necessitate a sailmaker fitting it if the hook plate cannot be removed from the harness without undoing stitching. Available now from good chandlers, as the saying goes. ISAF were supposed to be reviewing the different systems on the market, and coming up with an acceptable standard. Not applicable to the Sprint, but there is a system which uses a ball and socket, instead of a hook, to eliminate snagging, which nesessitated the debate. Has anyone seen/heard this report from ISAF?

A number of us bought New Magic Marine Harnesses with the quick release feature at the Dinghy Show in March for ?59.95 - that was about 25% off list price and is the whole harness - not just the quick release bar. The Dinghy Show is always the cheapest place to get the seasons sailing clothes. What's more Erling has agreed to be on the stand again this year (March 06)so you could get your order in and take advantage of our Southern Rep on the committee.

The brathwaitght design or dongle is a ball type systemyou need a ball fitting on your wires. So it only works on modified boats.It stops the hook damageing the boat when climbing aboard.

Quick Release Trapeze Harness

Update November 16th 2005


The ISAF Racing Rules Committee proposed a change to submission 147 on quick release harnesses, which will now see their mandatory introduction delayed until 2009. Committee Chairman David TILLETT (AUS) explained the change saying, 'It?s important that sailors recognize the safety issues here and it?s just as important to ensure that the right equipment is in place and an appropriate standard developed.'
