General News - WARNING: Internet Scammer Trying to Buy Boats

There is an internet scammer trying to buy boats. We have warned all our current sellers about the scam. We need to inform all our members who may be potential sellers to be on your guard.

There is a new variation on this scam:


The initial Contact mail looks like this: It seems to come from a John Spencer but probably varies.

Hello, How are you doing? I will like to knw if your boat is still available. If yes, please get back to me with your final asking price and details of its present condition as a honest seller. I am in Scotland and I will make necessary shipping arrangements. Regards. John


The reply is this if you reply:

Hello, Thanks for the mail.I will be glad to proceed with this transaction and I will want you to top offer it to me. To make the tarnsaction fast and easy, I will instruct a client of mine who is owing me the sum of 4,500 to issue out the cheque to you, I would collect the cheque myself but it takes about 2 months for me to clear cheques because I run my canadian account but I will try and sign up for uk account soon... I will be glad to compensate you with an additional 70 pounds for the inconveniencies and the rest could be sent to me upon clearance. I have a shipper who will come over for pick up at your location after the cheque clears. I require the actual name as it is to go on cheque and also the address where it should be mailed to including your phone number. I will supply you with all necessary shipping details upon payment receipt. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon. Regards.

AM INTERESTED IN BUYING THE BOAT YOU PLACED ON NET FORSALE.HOWEVER,I WANT TO KNOW THE BEST PRICE FOR IT AND ALSO TO KNOW IF IT'S AVAILABLE FORSALE. DO SEND THE PICS OF IT TO ME AND PLS DON'T HESITATE TO LET ME KNOW ANYTHING YOU FEEL I'D KNOW ABOUT IT.
WAITING FOR YOUR SWIFT RESPONSE.

AS FOR THE PAYMENT I'LL BE PAYING WITH A BANKER'S DRAFT WHICH'LL BE CASHED EASILY...I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT I'LL BE ADDING THE SHIPPING PAYMENT TO THE DRAFT THAT WILL BE SENT TO YOU IN WHICH YOU WILL DEDUCT YOUR £4,750 AND SEND THE REMAINING BALANCE TO THE SHIPPING COMPANY THAT 'LL BE COMING FOR THE PICK UP AT YOUR PLACE...TO SEND IT OUT I WILL NEED YOUR FULL NAME AND ADDRESS WHERE THE DRAFT WILL BE SENT TO AND PROBABLY YOUR PHONE NUMBER...THIS IS MINE 07045727234....DO SEND THE INFO TO ME ASAP...

Do not continue with these negotiations and simply delete the original contact email. It would appear to be from someone prentending to be in Scotland but are really based in Africa.

The same scam seems to be being used tagretting the International Canoe Association too with identical wording! Also the user seems to have a faulty caps lock key!
